Lyrics I Like
I should make it clear that lyrics I like have to be set to music that I also like. I wish I knew how to put the actual audio of each song into my blog posts. I'm sure there must be a way. But for now, here are the lyrics to but one of the many songs that I just discovered on Fiona Apple's 1999 album, When the Pawn. You can click on the song title to hear a snippet.
Yes, I know, I'm a little behind the times. I "discovered" Fiona only just the other day when I watched an episode of The Iconoclasts that profiled Fiona and Quentin Tarantino. Interesting pair. I like that show. The last one I saw was Isabella Rosellini paired with some environmentally conscious inventor guy whose name I've now forgotten (Norman Somebody, I think...). Did you know that Isabella, in addition to being Ingrid's daughter, an actress and philanthropist, is also a trainer of dogs for the blind? Yup.
I put the Amazon link to this album in my new "Music!" category, if you want to listen to snippets from various songs on the album.
I've always dreamed of being a song lyric writer. Maybe someday I'll be able to talk my songwriter friend Harlan into collaborating with me again, since he knows how to write music as well as lyrics. (We co-wrote the smash country hit, "One More Truckstop
Christmas," back in, heck, I can't even remember how many years ago
that was...quite a few. I'm still getting royalty checks, though. I
think the last one was for 76 cents.)
"A Mistake"
I'm gonna make a mistake
I'm gonna do it on purpose
I'm gonna waste my time
'Cause I'm full as a tick
And I'm scratching at the surface
And what I find is mine
And when the day is done, and I look back
And the fact is I had fun, fumbling around
All the advice I shunned, and I ran
Where they told me not to run, but I sure
Had fun, so
I'm gonna fuck it up again
I'm gonna do another detour
Unpave my path
And if you wanna make sense
Whatcha looking at me for
I'm no good at math
And when I find my way back,
The fact is I just may stay, or I may not
I've acquired quite a taste
For a wellmade mistake
I wanna mistake why can't I make a mistake?
I'm always doing what I think I should
Almost always doing everybody good
Why
Do I wanna do right, of course but
Do I really wanna feel I'm forced to
Answer you, hell no
I've acquired quite a taste
For a wellmade mistake, I wanna
Make a mistake, why can't I make a mistake
I'm always doing what I think I should
Almost always doing everybody good
Why

I like this song too. Used to play it over and over again at top volume. I wonder where my copy is.

So, write some lyrics. Give them to Harlan. Harlan is always open to genius. Also, 76 cents is ever so slightly better than a sharp stick to the eye, especially if it comes by check because you know it cost them two bucks to send the check.
